Interview – Danielle Ryan | Canadian Beats

Music is magic. It reaches inside our hearts, soul, and mind. It pulls at our emotions. This new tune, “Weather Man” by British Columbia Country singer-songwriter Danielle Ryan that was released on April 16 via 604 Records to all streaming platforms does just that. The song delivers Ryan’s unique country-pop sound and is a catchy tune about being in a relationship with someone who changes like the weather.

A little bit about Danielle Ryan for those of you who don’t know much about her:

“Danielle’s down-home work ethic allowed her to dive headfirst into the world of country, drawing from personal experiences new and old, and developing her craft, earning her national media coverage, a Top Six spot in the 2016 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Discovery Program and winning Country Music Television (CMT)’s Chevy from the Tailgate Contest. Holding herself to a high standard, Danielle’s priority is to do more than just sing songs, and to create music that really means something.”

I had the chance, through Canadian Beats, to chat via email with Danielle Ryan about “Weather Man” and more. Check it out.

Hi Danielle. Wow, your voice though. Brings chills it’s so beautiful. Thanks for taking the time for this interview.

First, let’s chat about “Weather Man.” I absolutely love it.

Can you tell us how this song came about and what it means to you? Did you write “Weather Man” and who produced it?

Thank you!! I wrote “Weather Man” on my bedroom floor and then got my brother to help me finish writing it. The inspiration for it came from: living on a farm we make hay in the summer. The weather report would call for sun all week and by noon it would start raining. I took that concept and related it to a relationship I had at the time. I wanted to work with Brian Howes on this one and I was so excited when he was on board for the project. He really brought all the elements together and it came to life.

Were you able to record any of this single in a studio, or did it have to be done remotely? What was this experience like for you?

I was actually able to record in a studio! It was so nice because I am such a social and face-to-face person. It was basically just the three of us the whole time – Brian, Karl (our engineer) and myself. This was a big highlight of my year – in the middle of the madness, I still got to do what I love and make music.

Now, on to some randoms …

How and where did it all begin for you? What drew your interest to the music industry?

There have been a few defining moments for me over my lifetime – things that really kept me going and encouraging me to stay the path. I remember one time in high school I was in a teen band contest and we performed to win like 500 bucks. We got to play at a club Downtown and that for me was a moment when I thought, “I wanna do this forever.”

How would you best describe your music?

I would say something along the lines of classic country elements fused with modern day.

What is your favourite and least favourite part about this line of work and why?

Right now … not getting to play live. That is one of my favourite things – going out and getting to share my music with people. Hopefully that changes soon!

You must have some coping mechanisms, other than music and singing, to help you get through this time to help you stay healthy and happy. What are they?

Oh wowow. My dogs. They’re the best. I have three – Honey, Winnie and Biscuits and they really make my days fun. I think I’m ear-to-ear with them always … unless they decide to eat my food off the counter …

What have you learned about your career and fans now that you’ve been at this for a while?

I have been kicking around in the industry for a while but April 16 marks the day of my first real single release. It will be cool to give all the people that have been following me on this journey something they can ask Alexa to play for them.

What artists have the most influence over you?

There are different things I take from different artists. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were big ones for me: strong women who created great music and a loyal fan base, Kacey Musgraves who says what she wants, and Shania Twain who speaks for herself. It’s cool to take a little bit of inspo from everyone and create something new.

What are your Top Three goals for 2021?

I’ve had a few goals for 2021 that I’ve been lucky enough to already achieve … like releasing my first single to radio! So, Let’s maybe make three more right now:
1) Release an EP
2) Learn how to play drums
3) Go to Disneyland *fingers crossed*

With all the many social media platforms that exist today telling the world your life story, is there anything about each of you that would be of interest to your fans; something that they couldn’t find on your own social network or even Google?

My first car was a convertible Chrysler because that’s what Veronica Mars drove.

Rising to the challenge of this pandemic, what is one message you would give to your fans?

There’s a reason for everything.

And last but not least, if you can have one thing that your fans could remember about you, what would it be?
